I’m over the moon to have been awarded a National Lottery Research & Development grant to begin developing a new direction in my work.
For the last 20 years I’ve been building large-scale metal structures and immersive environments, mostly in festival settings, work that’s temporary, high-impact, and designed to transform a space for a moment in time.
This project marks a shift away from that.
I’ll be using this R&D period to explore how sculpture can function more like living infrastructure, combining metal structures with planting, habitats, and wind-powered kinetic systems that can move water and support biodiversity over time.
I’ll be developing prototypes, working with an engineer, an ecologist, artist mentors and testing how these ideas can actually function in the real world, not just conceptually, but structurally, environmentally and in public space.
I’m also interested in how these kinds of works can be shaped with the communities they sit within, bringing in elements of co-design and local narrative as part of the process.

This blog is going to document that journey as it unfolds, the experiments, the failures, the unexpected directions, and (hopefully) the beginnings of something that can exist long-term, not just for a weekend.
